This year will mark the first time a Guitar Hero player may be awarded Protea Colours.

So says Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), the body responsible for the promotion of board games, e-sports, and host of the national gaming championships, where the top local guitar hero will be chosen to go to the World Cyber Games (WCG).

Usually, the finalist is chosen at Rage, SA's national gaming championships.

This year, because Rage is on the same weekend as the WCG, MSSA together with sponsor Samsung held the qualifiers for the event at each of the various Provincial LAN Championships - provincial versions of Rage. The eight finalists will compete for their national colours.

Colin Webster, president of MSSA, says: "Because of all the ground-work that was done last year, the MSSA will have met the criteria to apply for Protea Colours, which will be awarded to the gamer selected to represent SA at the WCG Grand Final event in Los Angeles."

National colours have been previously awarded for games such as mobile gaming, Defence of the Ancients (commonly known as DotA) and even texting.

Finalists from the Provincial LAN Championships will meet on 7 August at the Fountain Court, Sandton City, for the final trials, where the winning player will earn their position to officially represent SA.

This year's finalists are Dominic Brummer and Gage Ridley from Cape Town, Kevin Doran and Sebastian Collins from Gauteng, Nialle Dean Momsen and Peter Deon Mybergh from KwaZulu-Natal and Ryno Gildenhuys and Quinton Sweetman from the Free State.

Both Rage and WCG will take place on 1 October.
