Using electrical wiring to extend network infrastructure

Johannesburg, 28 Jun 2011

A new addition to the family of network adapters from Netgear, which allows for a building's electrical wiring system to be used to extend the network infrastructure, has been launched by the local Netgear distributor, Duxbury Networking.

The Netgear Universal Adapter XET1001 is designed to facilitate the creation of a fast, secure network connection in the home or small office, allowing a personal computer or networkable accessories to be linked anywhere there is a power outlet.

“By harnessing the electrical wiring in the home or office to transmit data, the Netgear Universal Adapter allows users to create network access points in places where a wireless signal cannot reach, and where it might be difficult to run Ethernet wiring,” says Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.

“The XET1001 is ideal for connecting game consoles, network storage devices and other accessories,” he adds.

Two adapters are needed to create a network connection. They are said to be easy to install, as there is no software required or configuration necessary. The network can be extended by simply installing additional adapters.

The units feature speeds of up to 85Mbps, claimed to be fast enough for media streaming, the downloading of large files and other bandwidth-heavy applications. Data is encrypted to boost security and privacy. Liquid crystal displays (LEDs) provide information on power and network status.
