NGO to benefit from IT excellence awards

Johannesburg, 25 Oct 2011

The Papillon Foundation, which celebrates its 10th birthday this year, will be the charity beneficiary of the upcoming Computer Society of SA (CSSA) President's Awards Breakfast, to be hosted in partnership with ITWeb.

A portion of the proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to the Papillon Foundation, a public benefit NGO that works towards the social development of previously disadvantaged communities. The Foundation aims to bring about real and effective long-term improvement to communities via IT skills training.

The Papillon Foundation is a longstanding free member of the CSSA, and regularly receives donated clothing from the CSSA as part of its charity projects.

The proceeds from the event will go towards the NGO's projects. Stephen Smith, director and founder of the Papillon Foundation, explains: “The fact that we earn tiny stipends is evidence that our income is ploughed back into our projects. The event's proceeds will sponsor those that cannot afford our subsidised course fees.

“Our independently audited financial statements over the past 10 years reveal that we have achieved amazing successes on a tiny budget, and this is evidence of our passion and our dedication to our work.”

The CSSA President's Awards aim to recognise outstanding talent, leadership, vision and commitment of individuals and organisations within the ICT industry.

The 2011 winners will be revealed at a business breakfast, to be held at the Hilton Sandton Hotel, on Thursday, 10 November.

Four awards will be presented at the event. The IT Personality of the Year award, now in its 33rd year, as well as the Visionary CIO of the Year award, will be presented by the CSSA in association with ITWeb, GIBS and Gartner Africa.

The award for Distinguished Service in ICT will be presented by the CSSA in associated with EngineerIT. The IT Leading Employer award will be presented by the CSSA in association with TalentAlign IT.

From January 2002 until July this year, the Papillon Foundation has trained 6 194 people, refurbished and replaced 482 computers, donated 196 tons of goods, and served 144 618 meals to communities.
