Hacker, cyber war expert at security summit

Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2011

Renowned white hat hacker, Moxie Marlinspike and US Naval Intelligence cyber defence expert, Kenneth Geers will be among the international speakers participating in the 7th annual ITWeb IT Security Summit, in May 2012.

Over 40 top international and local IT security experts will participate in the conference, to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre, from 15 to 17 May 2012. The ITWeb IT Security Summit and expo is regarded as SA's premier IT security event.

Marlinspike, a charismatic and well-known white hat hacker and security researcher, is a fellow at the Institute for Disruptive Studies, runs a cloud-based password-cracking service, and is co-founder of Whisper Systems. His talk at IT Security Summit 2010 was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the 400-plus delegates at the conference.

At Security Summit 2012, he will look at the issue of trust, in light of recent high-profile security breaches. His recent Black Hat talk was described as the most significant this year, since it proposed a solution to one of the most troublesome issues with Web security today. He will update South African delegates on latest breaches and proposed solutions during his keynote at the Security Summit.

Kenneth Geers is the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) cyber subject matter expert. He was the first US representative to the Co-operative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, Estonia, and is widely published on the relationship between information technology and national security. His talk will assess the challenge of cyber espionage, cyber threats to national critical infrastructures, and the prospects for cyber warfare.
