RDB Consulting partners with Oracle to offer database security

Johannesburg, 09 Dec 2011

Information has become the currency of today's world, and database security is of the utmost importance when it comes to safeguarding this wealth from theft and data loss.

RDB Consulting, expert in database, ERP and operating system (OS) outsourcing and monitoring, has stepped up to this need, incorporating Oracle's suite of database security solutions into its database outsource service. RDB Consulting will also monitor and maintain these security solutions for its clients.

"Database security is an area that has been neglected both internationally and within the South African market. One only has to look at the Wikileaks scandal to see just how vulnerable the database can be. It is vital to have the right checks and balances in place to secure the database, because unscrupulous people will always exploit any vulnerability for their own gain," says Jaroslav Cerny, CEO at RDB Consulting.

"Incorporating Oracle's database security products into our portfolio is a natural extension of our offering, since we are specialists in Oracle databases from set-up to optimisation to maintenance. Having this database knowledge, experience and expertise is vital for adequate database security and for the running and maintenance of security products. We are now able to offer a full spectrum of services around the database - including security - providing our clients with access to a complete solution from a single vendor. This is a more financially viable option that does not require patching for a variety of products, and offers a single point of contact for the client, for everything related to the database," he adds.

Oracle's Database Security suite delivers a comprehensive portfolio of security solutions, combining tools such as: database activity monitoring and blocking; privileged user and multi-factor access control; data classification; transparent data encryption; consolidated auditing and reporting; secure configuration management; and data masking, to ensure data privacy, protect against insider threats, and enable regulatory compliance.

Oracle Identity Management allows enterprises to manage the end-to-end life cycle of user identities across all enterprise resources both within and beyond the firewall, enabling organisations to deploy applications faster, apply the most granular protection to enterprise resources, automatically eliminate latent access privileges, and much more. Together, these offerings, coupled with RDB Consulting's services, will provide a multi-faceted, full featured database security offering ongoing maintenance and support.

"Through tactical acquisitions, Oracle has built comprehensive Identity and Access Management and Database Security suites that are highly regarded in the market, and are particularly strong in the areas of governance, risk and compliance (GRC) as confirmed by our continued placement in the Leader section of Gartner's Magic Quadrant. We offer full end-to-end security with a large international footprint, ensuring South African clients of leading global technology," says Danny Ilic, Enterprise Information Security Strategist at Oracle.

"By partnering with RDB Consulting, we are bridging this technology with local resources, allowing us to grow our market strategically through our partners. As a Platinum Oracle Partner, RDB Consulting was a natural choice for this expansion. They have the experience, client base and commitment to excellence to be able to offer Oracle Best Practice from business right through to IT," he adds.

RDB Consulting will incorporate this new offering through a twofold approach of both consulting services and software licensing. The consulting phase will involve investigations and a health check on existing database security, as well as a comprehensive report, which will recommend the ideal products to address vulnerabilities identified during the process.

"As an outsourced provider we are perfectly positioned to assist organisations with database security. Having this service in-house can lead to complacency over time, and from an operational perspective, outsourcing tends to be more cost-effective and reliable. While it is not realistic to outsource the entire security operation, by co-sourcing with specialist consultants on the operational side, a partnership can be created whereby collusion can be minimised thanks to the presence of a third-party, and continuity of the solution can be assured," says Cerny.

"This extension of our business opens up avenues to new markets, but is a natural fit, since we are already database specialists and can ensure that security solutions are correctly configured. We are now able to offer a more comprehensive end-to-end offering that includes security, adhering to Oracle Best Practice across the board and delivering ITIL and ISO 20000 compliance in a service that includes maintenance, consulting, ongoing support, annual checks and analysis across all aspects of the database," he concludes.
