Obsidian trains SA's first Red Hat Certified Datacenter Specialists

Johannesburg, 13 Mar 2012

Open source solutions and training provider Obsidian is paving the way for further adoption of Red Hat enterprise services by training and certifying South Africa's first group of three Red Hat Certified Datacenter Specialists (RHCDS).

The certification is the highest yet obtained in the country, and is one step short of the Red Hat Certified Architect qualification, the most senior system administration credential available.

“We hope these are the first of many Red Hat administrators to take advantage of the benefits of being certified to this level,” says Muggie van Staden, Obsidian MD.

“As local data centres are getting bigger, so the need to apply the right tools that enable reliability, scalability and optimisation has grown. I think this also shows the extent to which open source systems are being adopted in South Africa.

“The successful completion of the certification also shows that our training more than adequately prepares candidates for a qualification that places them far ahead of the field.”

The RHCDS certification builds on the skills acquired in qualifying as a Red Hat Certified Engineer, such as systems deployment, management, clustering and storage management. It does so by grounding administrators in additional functions such as directory services and authentication, and managing virtualised systems.

Obsidian has been a certified Red Hat training provider since 1999, is the largest of the three training partners in South Africa, and is qualified to offer training up to Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), as well as Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) level.

Van Staden says he hopes to have the country's first RHCA certified in the next six months, who would be one of the current RHCDS graduates.

“The role of the architect is to design data centres that are scalable, secure and operate optimally, and we're very excited about being able to offer this training locally to meet the growing demand we see for such skills. This will go a long way to ensuring we have the right skills locally when they're needed, as well as facilitating the growth of Red Hat in southern Africa.”
