New iPad in SA next week

Johannesburg, 17 Apr 2012

Apple has announced the next wave of rollouts for the new iPad, with SA pegged to get the new tablet on 27 April.

The new iPad was initially released on 16 March, and according to Apple, it was its strongest iPad launch yet, with over three million units sold over the first weekend.

The new iPad, which was widely expected to be named the iPad 3, has LTE support and features a new Retina display, A5X chip, quad-core graphics, 5MP iSight camera and 1080p HD video.

In an official release, Apple announced the new iPad would become available in South Korea and 11 other countries from this Friday (20 April). This will be followed by further rollouts to SA and eight other countries, including Thailand and Colombia, on 27 April.

Taryn Hyam, Apple communications manager for Core Group (the local distributor of Apple products), confirmed the launch date on Twitter and said: “We are currently finalising local pricing to retailers/resellers. We will share more info once available.”

At the beginning of March, Core dropped the cost of the iPad 2. Any entry-level WiFi iPad 2 is available for R3 999, while the 3G-enabled models have dropped by between R1 000 and R1 400. The top-of-the-range tablet - the 64GB with 3G - is now R7 299.
