Kaspersky Lab experts have detected a new type of Trojan targeted at Android tablets that steals mobile transactional authentication numbers as well as credentials used for online banking.

According to the security giant, malicious applications created specifically for the Android platform are on the rise; making up 65% of mobile malware applications, and these malicious applications were found being distributed via the official Android Market online shop.

Security researchers found that the number of instances of malware targeting mobile devices exceeded 6 400 in December 2011.

In light of these trends, Kaspersky has rolled out a solution for protecting Android-based tablets called Kaspersky Tablet Security.

According to the vendor, its anti-virus engine blocks all malicious programs and introduces a Web Protection feature, which helps block malicious or fraudulent Web sites when using the Android browser.

Kaspersky says the software also notifies the user of harmful Web sites that are looking to steal social networking or online banking account details. It can also remotely block a lost or stolen device and wipe all personal data sitting on the tablet.

Global research firm Gartner says almost 300 million tablets will be sold in 2015, with Android's market share steadily increasing. In addition, the number of attacks on these devices will also rise as cyber criminals increasingly target users' personal data.
