Samsung Galaxy SII users can now download the latest Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), for their handsets.
The electronics manufacturer says updates for other models will “follow soon”. Head of mobile communications at Samsung SA, Craige Fleischer, says: “This upgrade has been highly anticipated locally and we expect that our South African customers will enjoy an enhanced experience with their Galaxy device through this upgrade.”
ICS made its debut last year on the flagship Galaxy Nexus handset. The OS marks a concerted effort by Google to unify its ecosystem across all devices. ICS has been widely hailed as the best Android OS to date.
Features of the new OS include an improved user interface, redesigned app gallery, face unlock, faster performance and response times.
Samsung says the software upgrade is available via the via KIES PC client (by downloading the firmware via the KIES application). This is available across Open (XFA), Vodacom (XFV), MTN (XFM) and Cell C (XFC).
Samsung adds the upgrade via FOTA (by downloading the firmware upgrade over the air directly from the handset) will be available by the end of the day (18 May).
At the Samsung Africa Forum, in March, Samsung announced the first Galaxy Tabs to run ICS would arrive in SA in the second quarter, in the form of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2.
