EMC's Greenplum Analytics Workbench, a development environment for big data innovation and research, is now live.
Scott Yara, senior VP of Greenplum, a division of EMC, made this announcement at EMC World last week.
According to Yara, big data provides immense opportunity if people are able to analyse it to make real-time predictions. However, he said, the volume of data available means this cannot be done without new tools.
According to Yara, the Analytics Workbench addresses the need for a platform to test possible big data analytics tools.
Yara described the Analytics Workbench as a platform with pools of both structured and unstructured data, derived from social media, sensor devices and call centres. According to Yara, developers can test real-time big data analytics tools using this data. He argued that this will drive big data innovation.
Yara added that the workbench can be used for free; however, there is a vetting process for organisations and businesses that want to use it.
The Analytics Workbench is the result of collaboration between EMC, Intel, Mellanox Technologies, Micron, Seagate, SuperMicro, Switch and VMware, according to Yara. He added that, with the workbench, Greenplum is also collaborating with universities including Stanford, Berkley and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
According to EMC, Greenplum is also working with the Apache Software Foundation to ensure that results from the Analytics Workbench are available to the open source community, in an effort to accelerate the development of Hadoop, an open source software framework for running data-intensive applications.
