Telkom 'scanning' for ICT opportunities

Johannesburg, 11 Jun 2012

JSE-listed Telkom is looking for opportunities in the ICT space to fill in the gaps it has in its skills set.

ICT is adjacent to Telkom's connectivity plans, but is an area in which it does not have the required skills, says CEO Nombulelo “Pinky” Moholi. She says the company does not have the “luxury” of building a unit from scratch.

Moholi says the group is “scanning” for opportunities in the sector that will give it scale.

Telkom's CEO spoke to ITWeb after its annual results presentation on Friday, one week after its proposed deal with KT Corporation fell through.

Moholi says she is mindful of the 2007 decision by the Competition Tribunal to block Telkom's proposed R4 billion buyout of Business Connexion. Telkom will look at avoiding those pitfalls.

During the presentation, Moholi said ICT in the enterprise environment is one of Telkom's opportunities as it is adjacent to its core competences. The group is moving towards an IP-enabled network and will shift to converged personal communication, individual IT as a service, unbounded connected systems, as well as computing and software as a service.

Telkom Business' targets for the new financial year include launching productised cloud services, pre-packed and tailor-made fixed-to-mobile converged services, and repositioning its fibre portfolio.

Data also drives Telkom's consumer strategy, says Moholi. She says the company will work with partners to deliver rich offerings and will consolidate its products.
