Data virtualisation - the next hype?

Advances in technology brought about data virtualisation - the ability to gain access to information quickly - which has changed the role of information in business.

This is according to Dataways director Bill Hoggarth, who notes that data virtualisation is not an option, but an essential part of business, as it connects people and business with data throughout the world.

Organisations need to be encouraged to think about data differently, he says, though he notes that people also need to be wary of being promised too much by providers; the facts about data virtualisation need to be balanced, Hoggarth explains.

He uses Google as an example to illustrate this. If Google can process information at the rate it does, why can this technology not be done on a smaller scale, he asks.

ITWeb Virtualisation and Cloud Computing Summit 2012

ITWeb's Virtualisation and Cloud Computing Summit takes place from 17 to 19 July 2012. For more information and to reserve your seat, click here.

Similarly, if social network Twitter can track what people are talking about, why can't this technology be used in an organisation to find out what employees are talking about?

Hoggarth is a speaker at the ITWeb Virtualisation and Cloud Computing Summit, where he will provide an overview of data virtualisation and tangible technology platforms that treat data as a real entity - enabling its understanding.
