Telkom ups line rental fees

Johannesburg, 29 Jun 2012

Adjustments to Telkom's fees for line rentals, outgoing calls, DSL and data connectivity services were released yesterday, revealing an overall price hike of 1.2% for basic voice and data services.

The fixed-line operator's annual tariff adjustment has been filed with the Independent Communications Authority of SA and will come into effect as of 1 August.

While monthly rental fees on Telkom's Do Broadband bundles remain unchanged, the company says monthly rental fees on its DSL products will increase. Fast DSL goes up R13 per month (to R165), Faster DSL will increase by R10 per month (to R299) and the price of Fastest DSL will go up by R12 per month (to R425).

Telkom's Closer Calling plans will also see an increase in monthly subscription, with Closer 1 increasing to R167 (from R158), Closer 2 to R185 (from R177) and Closer 3 to R341 (from R333) per month.

Manelisa Mavuso, Telkom's MD for consumer services and retail, says there will, however, be a drop in fixed-to-mobile call rates. “The new per minute tariffs will be reduced by 3.6%, to R1.35, for peak time and R1.08 for off-peak calls.”

PrepaidFone local calls increase by 5%, but long distance calls remain unchanged. Line rental for PrepaidFone will increase by 6%. Postpaid residential and business line rental increase by 6%. Installation charges increase by 6%, including Postpaid, PrepaidFone ISDN and DSL services.

International calls, says Telkom, will not increase overall, but tariffs to certain destinations will increase while others will decrease. “Some destinations, for example the UK and US, remain unchanged.”

Mavuso says, in light of competition in the industry “heating up” the company has endeavoured to compete and “ultimately promote affordable telecommunications access”. In line with this, he points out the tariff adjustment is below the Consumer Price Index.

“The adjustments (1.2% on the whole and 1%, overall, for data connectivity products) are significantly less than inflation, which is currently at 5.7%.”
