Voice over IP (VOIP) is the future of telephony in SA and the time has come to shift the consumer market in this direction.

This is according to SA's second biggest Internet service provider (ISP), MWeb, which has geared its new VOIP product to cater to South African consumers.

The IP telephony service, MWeb Talk, offers users free on-network calls to other MWeb Talk users and reduced calls to landline and cellphone numbers. MWeb says the product was prompted by an increased demand over recent months for the ISP's existing VOIP products.

Carolyn Holgate, GM of MWeb Connect - the ISP's small office/home office division - says the company has seen a patent transformation in users' Internet behaviour. “Consumers want services that complement their ADSL connectivity solution.” Holgate adds the growth has been “phenomenal”, with MWeb projecting it will deliver over 100 million minutes via its VOIP platform by the end of the year.

MWeb says it has made significant investments in its infrastructure, with its VOIP platforms taking priority on its network to ensure scalability, performance and stability of the MWeb Talk service.

MWeb customers can sign up for the service online. The ISP says the MWeb Talk application is available for PC and Mac, as well as mobile applications that “turn an iPhone, Android or Nokia smartphone into a VOIP phone”.
