Ouya partners XBMC

Ouya, the Android open source gaming console which has taken Kickstarter and the world of gaming by storm and that has just 20 hours left of its campaign, has revealed in the eleventh hour that it has now partnered with media centre creators XBMC, according to Geeky Gadgets.

XBMC are the creators of the open source media player and entertainment hub, which is now set to arrive on Ouya once it's released, adding even more functionality to the open source games console, which already includes OnLive Gaming and more.

The talks between the two teams are still young, but it's possible that Ouya wants XBMC to be its default media centre app, reports Android Authority.

The match-up between the two makes perfect sense because they both have the same open source philosophies.

According to the XBMC community manager, they've received a lot of requests for XBMC to come to Ouya as well.

“Maybe it was inevitable. Maybe it was because of the hundreds, if not thousands, of demands on Twitter, in blogs, on Facebook, in Reddit, and in Kickstarter comments. Maybe it's because many of Team OUYA support XBMC, and nearly a third of Team XBMC members are OUYA backers.”

“Regardless, we are delighted to announce that XBMC will be working with Ouya to ensure that XBMC works well on the Ouya platform. Ouya's Android underpinnings and XBMC's work on Android (soon to be merged into master, pending final sign-offs!) will dramatically speed up that effort, as will early XBMC dev access to Ouya prototypes,” XMBC says as reported by The Inquirer.

Talks are described as being in their early stages, but “ongoing and positive”. More information is expected to be released when it becomes available.
