Forget backup - it's all about recovery

Johannesburg, 20 Aug 2012

Companies operate in a 24x7 world. However, their most important asset (their data) is only protected once every 24 hours - creating a serious risk and potential compliance issues for organisations. Because technology continues to advance at an alarming rate, the need for backing up data is rising every day. For businesses that store their most necessary and cherished information on their machines and servers, backing up is not only a good plan; it is a necessity.

"The only reason we back up our data is to be able to restore it at some stage in the future, and real-time recovery delivers next-generation, proven, reliable and affordable real-time data protection and real-time recovery of systems, applications, settings, preferences and databases," says Simon Campbell-Young, CEO of Phoenix Software. "Data is the lifeblood of your organisation - without it, the business ceases to exist. Without having good backup and recovery software on your side, the chances that you could potentially end up in a tough spot are far too high."

Real-time recovery has evolved due to the cost, complexity and reliability of traditional tape-based backup and recovery products. Most traditional backup and recovery products focus on the backup process and not what is important to a customer - which is the recovery process. Traditional tape-based solutions fail to meet the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that organisations of all sizes now require. In addition, ever increasing mandatory regulations for information compliance add yet another layer of complexity to maintaining the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.

ShadowProtect from StorageCraft provides superior backup, recovery and disaster recovery by delivering a solution that recovers files or folders in seconds to any 15-minute point in time; rebuilds servers in minutes to the same, totally different hardware or a virtual environment; and protects data in real-time. "Using ShadowProtect, data and databases (eg Exchange, SQL and SharePoint) are protected every 15 minutes with fast recovery of single files, folders and even Exchange mailboxes, and the included disaster recovery enables full system rebuilds to the same, totally different or a virtual environment - often for less than the annual maintenance on your existing backup product. This delivers an immediate ROI and financial savings to your business," Campbell-Young points out.

The ShadowProtect range comprises ShadowProtect Desktop, which provides fast and reliable disaster recovery, data protection and system migration to get desktops and laptops online as quickly as possible; ShadowProtect Server, which includes bare metal recovery to the same system, dissimilar hardware or to and from virtual environments, and protects an entire server environment including the operating system, applications like Microsoft Exchange and SQL, and data; ShadowProtect ImageManager, which allows users to consolidate point-in-time backup images on a daily, weekly and monthly basis for simplified management; ShadowProtect IT Edition, which provides a snapshot in time of a particular computer or server, and is a powerful tool for any IT professional to revert back to a point in time in the event something goes wrong with a task or change; and ShadowProtect Virtual, a tool to manage today's hybrid computing environments.
