The Galaxy S3 is Samsung's most successful smartphone to date, with over 20 million units sold.

Earlier this week, some reports claimed Samsung plans to unveil the successor to the popular Galaxy S3 at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, in February next year.

Responding to the rumours via its Korean Twitter account, Samsung posted a tweet in Korean, which stated the reports were based on "a simple rumour [that] is not true".

The Korean Times was the first to report on the rumours and cited an unnamed "official from the firm" as saying the next-generation Galaxy handset would go on sale as soon as March next year. The report also claimed the S4 would feature a five-inch, OLED display.

The report stated the S4 is "expected to be the firm's most powerful handset yet in terms of hardware specifications and software advancement" and will further cement Samsung's leadership in the smartphone market.

According to Samsung, 20 million Galaxy S3 handsets were sold in 100 days since its launch in May, and the company expects to surpass the 30 million figure before year-end. This makes the Galaxy S3 Samsung's most successful smartphone to date. The handset is also widely viewed as the biggest competitor to Apple's new iPhone 5.

On the back of record-breaking pre-order figures for the iPhone 5, some analysts have predicted Apple could sell between eight million and 10 million units during the first weekend of sales alone.

Competition

While the fiercest competition remains between Samsung and Apple, new offerings from other smartphone manufacturers could make for an interesting quarter. Following the launch of the iPhone 5, both LG and Motorola unveiled new flagship smartphones this week.

Motorola's Razr i is a collaboration between Motorola Mobility and Intel, and the handset features a 4.3-inch display, Intel 2GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB on-board storage and an 8MP camera. It also has a PenTile display with a relatively low resolution of 960x540. Motorola, however, claims that the Razr i has a battery that is 40% more powerful than the iPhone 4S.

LG also hopes to carve a place for itself in the smartphone market with its new flagship smartphone, the Optimus G. The new handset has a 13MP camera and a 4.7-inch screen. The Optimus G also includes voice control functionality.

Other features include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU, 1280x768 True HD IPS display, 2GB RAM, 32GB built-in storage, NFC and LTE support.
