Euphoria launches ADSL alternative to make VOIP viable for SMEs

Better quality, affordable wireless options overcome inadequacies of 'best-effort' ADSL, says George Golding, MD of Euphoria Telecom.

Johannesburg, 20 Sep 2012

Due to the quality issues with ADSL and the bad name this has (unfairly) given VOIP in the small and medium-sized enterprise market, Euphoria Telecom is launching a wireless alternative with greatly improved quality in the country's main centres.

The service is launching in Johannesburg during September 2012 and will be sold via VOIP service providers. In coming months, coverage will extend to Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Largely unusable ADSL

George Golding, MD of the cloud-based communications service provider, explains that while ADSL is cost-effective for SMEs, it is simply not reliable enough to carry voice traffic.

"Usually, over-contention, distance or poor exchange maintenance is to blame. Modern exchanges that are not oversubscribed are fine for VOIP, but you won't always know that a link is unsuitable, because it might behave well enough in data tasks that are not as dependent on real-time throughput at peak times during the day."

Affordable, quality alternative

To meet the need for an affordable alternative to ADSL, Euphoria Telecom has been working with wireless access providers to provide a greatly improved service experience.

Techniques adopted include dedicated, prioritised IPCs (IP Connect, a Telkom service that provides great quality assurance), quality-of-service (QoS) measures that prioritise voice over all other data, and VPN tunnelling, which improves transmission quality and reduces the risk of interference problems from other wireless providers in the area.

The service will come with an automatic fail-over feature - if the wireless link goes down for any reason, such as lightning, it will establish a new link on your backup / data line automatically until the wireless link is back up and running.
