Deon Liebenberg - head of Telkom Business Mobile since mid-July - resigned this morning.

Deon Liebenberg has become the latest of Telkom's top brass to resign from the company, following the resignation of CEO Nombulelo "Pinky" Moholi, on Monday.

Telkom this morning confirmed that Liebenberg had quit, less than four months into his tenure as managing executive for Telkom Business Mobile - a relatively new division of the fixed-line telco's operations.

Vodacom spokesperson Richard Boorman has confirmed Liebenberg will be joining the mobile operator, where he has been employed in the past. Vodacom is yet to make a statement as to what position he will fill.

Liebenberg, formerly MD of Samsung Electronics SA, joined the company in mid-July. At the time, Telkom welcomed him as an industry veteran and said he would "play a vital role in positioning the company as the leading provider of converged communication solutions in SA".

Having started a sales career at Telkom 18 years ago, as corporate account manager for the company, Liebenberg subsequently headed the sales division at Vodacom and has also fulfilled the role of country sales director at Motorola and Research In Motion.

Liebenberg's departure - apart from adding to the growing list of vacancies at Telkom - is likely to be a blow, specifically to the company's business division, with the dedicated mobile unit (launched in September last year) still in its fledgling stages.

Brian Armstrong, MD of Telkom Business, previously praised Liebenberg, saying his "vast knowledge and experience" would greatly benefit Telkom and Telkom Business.

Telkom's board of directors now has eight empty seats, following the resignation of non-executive director Neo Phakama Dongwana (coinciding with that of Moholi on Monday) and government's vote against the re-election of four of the company's directors at Telkom's AGM last month.
