JSE-listed Telkom has appointed Attila Vitai as MD of Telkom Mobile with effect from today, the group says.

This is the first time the group has had an MD at its mobile arm, which combines 8ta and Telkom Business Mobile, although it indicated some time ago that it would look for someone to head up the slot.

Vitai spent 12 years at Motorola as a VP in Europe, and eight years as CEO of two large Vodafone businesses in Hungary and Turkey, in both instances as a challenger in demanding developing markets.

"Vitai brings a wealth of experience with a successful 20-year track record of senior management in the telecoms industry," says Telkom in a statement.

Telkom says Vitai's experience will be "invaluable" as he executes on his mandate to grow Telkom Mobile into a profitable and sustainable business in a highly competitive industry.

Vitai has an MBA from the Henley Business School at the University of Reading. He is also a qualified chartered accountant and has obtained qualifications in BA Accounting and Finance as well as certified general accounting.

"I am confident that Attila's vast knowledge and experience of this industry will translate into positive growth in our mobile arm. We welcome him to Telkom and wish him all the best in his new endeavour," says Telkom group CEO, Nombulelo Moholi.
