Apple's latest handset in its iconic iPhone range goes on sale in SA tomorrow.

The latest in Apple's iconic range of phones, the iPhone 5, will be available from some local operators on launch tomorrow, while others have yet to confirm an availability date.

The iPhone 5 is the thinnest and lightest iPhone to date, redesigned to feature a new four-inch Retina display, and an Apple-designed A6 chip for fast performance.

The smartphone is currently available in about 50 countries around the world, including the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK. It went on sale in South Korea on 7 December, and will hit SA, Brazil, Russia and Taiwan tomorrow.

Vodacom, SA's largest mobile operator, says it will offer the iPhone 5 from tomorrow. The recommended prepaid pricing, which could vary, is R8 799 for the 16GB handset, R10 299 for the 32GB device, and R11 699 for the 64GB model.

Contract pricing varies between R399 a month for an entry-level deal on the 16GB phone, to R1 750 on Vodacom's Talk1000 package for the top-level phone.

MTN, SA's second-largest mobile operator, will also offer the phone from tomorrow and customers can now pre-register interest for the iPhone 5.

The handset will be available on a 24-month contract for R529 per month for the 16GB model, R579 per month for the 32GB model, and R629 per month for the 64GB model at selected MTN stores.

Cell C could not confirm pricing yesterday, but notes the launch date is 14 December. Virgin Mobile, SA's virtual operator, plans to add the phone to its range, but could not provide a date.

In comparison, according to Apple, the suggested contract price in the US is $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the 64GB model.

The iPhone 5 comes in either black and slate or white and silver.
