Samsung Galaxy Note II users now have access to Garmin's Navigon navigation app at no cost, thanks to a partnership between Samsung Electronics SA and Garmin Southern Africa.

"We are thrilled with this partnership," says Craige Fleischer, director of mobile communications at Samsung Electronics SA. "It provides our Galaxy Note II users with the ability to experience true turn-by-turn navigation on their mobile devices without needing to be connected to the Internet, resulting in extended battery life and reduced data costs."

According to Samsung, once Navigon is installed, a WiFi connection can be used to download local maps, a process users only need to do once. The navigation app uses the device's GPS receiver and preloaded maps to make navigation possible without Internet connectivity.

What's included?

The app features on-board NAVTEQ maps of SA, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia, which can be viewed in 2D and 3D. Like most navigation tools, Navigon offers users turn-by-turn voice guidance, intelligent address search and live weather.

Navigon's MyRoutes service recommends the best route depending on the user's driving style.

Reality View Pro offers photo-realistic displays of exits, and Google Street View provides real pictures of the destination and its surroundings.

Using Navigon's Last Mile and Pedestrian Navigation, Galaxy Note ll users will be guided to the actual destination after parking their vehicles and can use Google's Local Search to access up-to-date point of interest search results.

At an additional cost, Navigon users can tailor the app to meet their unique navigation needs. Some of these customisations include red light camera and school zone warnings, as well as an international voices feature, which boasts various dialects.

Navigon by Garmin for the Galaxy Note II is already available for download from the Samsung Apps store, and according to Samsung, Galaxy Note II devices will soon come with Navigon preloaded.
