Millions of rotten teeth placed in shoes and under pillows since the idea of the Tooth Fairy was conceived bears testimony to the fact that feeding sweets to a young child should be easy to do.
However, Chillingo's Cut the Rope game for iPad proves that feeding candy to a little green monster is not that simple an exercise. This fun and easy-to-play game will at first seem to appeal mostly to children, but can, in fact, be enjoyed by adults too.
The aim of the game is really simple. A ball of candy attached to a rope needs to be fed to a little green monster by cutting the rope and dropping the candy into the monster's mouth. The candy ball must collect yellow stars on the way to its destination.
As the ultimate goal is to feed the candy to the monster, a level will not be completed if that objective is not achieved, irrespective of the amount of yellow stars collected. Players need to collect as many yellow stars as possible, as the more stars they collect, the more bonus points they earn.
If the candy is fed to the monster without collecting any yellow stars, the player will be given a "passable" score for that level, and no bonus points will be earned.
The game consists of 12 levels, with 25 sub-levels within each. A level is completed when all 25 sub-levels within a particular level have been completed and the minimum required amount of star bonus points have been obtained to unlock the next level.
Options and challenges
The game gives players an option in the form of a bubble that will assist them to complete a level with maximum points. The player may position the candy ball to fall into this bubble, which lifts the ball, enabling the player to collect more yellow stars, and, therefore, more star bonus points.
However, the bubble needs to be popped to stop it from flying away, like a balloon would fly into the air if the attached string was let go. Should this happen, the level needs to be attempted again.
Naturally, the game becomes more difficult as the player progresses through the levels. There are times when the candy is attached to stretched ropes, which are highlighted in red. These ropes are tensed and, when cut, the candy ball does not swing, as it does when the normal ropes are cut, but rather shoots forward.
This makes controlling the candy a little more challenging, as the speed at which it moves increases. Also, candy must be kept away from spikes that appear in the later levels otherwise the ball will burst.
Verdict
Chillingo's Cut the Rope for iPad is a game that is not only fun, but also stimulates logical thinking. Don't let the candy-hungry green monster fool you into believing this game is easy and meant just for children.
A good few adults would find this game challenging to progress through, as much consideration is required, especially as the levels become more complicated. However, the 25 sub-levels within a level make the game a time-consuming exercise and players could lose interest as a result.
There is no doubt that players of this game will find entertainment and relaxation value in it. It is stimulating and challenging at times, but players will need to have a lot of time on their hands if they are to progress to the more difficult levels.
