Cambium Networks' PMP 450 platform will help ISPs tackle the rapid growth in data usage, says regional sales manager Tony Rodrigues.

A few years ago, streaming video accounted for 30% of all data usage; today, that figure stands at 60%, and subscriber usage has increased by over 500% since 2007.

So says Tony Rodrigues, regional sales manager at Cambium Networks, who adds that Internet service providers (ISPs) have had to keep up with this massive growth in data usage due to the fast adoption of the Internet for streaming voice (Skype) and video (YouTube) applications.

"There is a continuous growth in the voice/video streaming market. Advances in computer networking, combined with powerful home computers and modern operating systems, makes streaming media practical and affordable for ordinary consumers. Technology has become more accessible to all," says Rodrigues. "Subscriber requirements have evolved from bursts of high-bandwidth throughput to much more sustained sessions."

According to Rodrigues, the above-mentioned Internet challenges have meant service providers are broadening their coverage areas and service offerings, and are deploying higher capacity, converged networks, while still striving to remain profitable. "As these carriers evolve their networks, they have to support the growth of more expansive offerings, while balancing capital expenditures and operational costs to achieve a more profitable bottom line."

Rodrigues describes Cambium Networks' wireless broadband solution, PMP 450, as a technology that will assist carriers, service providers and private network operators to address the challenges of speed, capacity and reliability.

"The PMP 450 is designed to enhance both the technical and business cases for Internet service providers," Rodrigues says. According to Cambium, the platform delivers the speed required for triple-play voice, video and data services, with non line of sight (NLOS) capabilities.

"Cambium Networks' PMP 450 provides a cost-effective avenue that service providers can utilise to enhance the overall capacity delivered to their business and residential access networks by allowing more users and/or higher rate plans," Rodrigues says, pointing out that new features can be added as they become available.

According to Rodrigues, the PMP 450 platform underscores Cambium Networks' drive to improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs and keep the customer happy. "Finding a solution that provides a high-capacity, scalable and cost-effective upgrade path for growth in the future is key."
