Evolution of photography: Do. Develop. Yourself...

Johannesburg, 27 May 2013

iPhoneography may sound like something that Apple fans do in the dark at home, but it is actually the next evolution in the world of amateur and professional photography. Add a cost-effective, high-quality Epson printer into the mix and smartphone users have the power to express publish their images digitally and in hard copy more easily than ever before.

Apple was the first phone manufacturer to include a high-resolution camera in its phones, and this step, along with the proliferation of photo editing applications for smartphones, has changed the way that we take and share photographs. Furthermore, as printer technology has evolved, taking photos and printing them is no longer a costly and time-consuming process - edited and manipulated images can be quickly and inexpensively printed at home, wirelessly.

The smartphone photographer's inspiration can happen anywhere - on the street, at work, in a taxi, or at home. It's seen as the new zeitgeist of mobile photography, as amateur photographers snatch a shot of a sunset waning in the distance, or a child mesmerised by a caterpillar, and transform ordinary images into publishable works.

Capture the moment:

Capturing a memorable moment no longer means lugging a heavy camera bag around, making sure you've got film and a charged battery - it's as simple as unlocking your phone, opening the camera app, and snapping what's going on.

For example, Apple's iPhone cameras have evolved since the first iPhone camera shipped with two megapixel capability. The iPhone 5 still leads the market, boasting eight megapixels, a boosted ISO, a panorama mode and increased tolerance of low light scenarios compared to its predecessors. Smartphone cameras are more powerful than many point-and-shoot digital cameras on the market today, and are much easier to use too. This simplicity is further enhanced as you can use the device to send images to print wirelessly, via Epson's iPrint app and a WiFi connection.

Below is a selection of photo-taking apps available to download, that offer a wider range of options than the iPhone's already very capable camera application:

* ProCamera [https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/procamera/id300216827?mt=8]

Edit your artwork:

The photos you take at weddings, parties, barmitzvahs, births, or of the everyday on-goings of life are the moments you want to keep forever. You just have to look at sites like iPhoneography.com or Flickr to see how effective the iPhone and relevant apps can be in transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

So be inspired. Take the photo. And then play around with the various filters, borders, and other magic buttons that turn your ordinary photo into a print-ready masterpiece.

Print your photos:

Once you've created your masterpiece and published it online, don't forget to share it in real life too! Printing photos at home is now easier than ever before, and Epson's recently launched Ink Tank System (ITS) printers have made it even more affordable to do so.

With more than 50 years of printing research and innovation to its name, Epson has fine-tuned its ink and printing technology to dramatically reduce the costs of printing photos - and has made it even easier to do so via its own iPrint app - free to download from the iTunes app store (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/epson-iprint/id326876192?mt=8).

Epson's L800 ITS photo printer can print up to 1 800 10cm x 15cm photos using one ink tank system, with a cost of only R0.57c per photo.

Epson's L355 printer - a colour printer ideal for home office use, also prints superior quality photos, as does the multifunction Epson L550 printer. What makes these printers special? Their 70ml per colour ink tanks, priced at approximately R99 each, mean that you no longer need to think twice before sending your images to print!

More than just photography

You can take photos with your smartphone, add effects, edit them, and print them out in a hundred different ways to create art, gifts, memories and moments. Your only limit is your own creativity. Say goodbye to the days when you spent ages choosing your top five photos to trust to the develop and print shop. Print them all. Create a montage. Make a t-shirt. Revamp a wall clock. Ignore limits, there are none.

Epson may have been around for half a century, but it has maintained its position as a market leader by constantly focusing on innovation. Its iPrint app works on both iOS and Android systems that allows you to instantly and wirelessly print anything stored on your device.

Combined with Epson's Ink Tank System WiFi-enabled printers (L350 and L550), the iPrint app offers a complete solution for affordable home printing that won't impact on time, budget or creativity. It has never been so affordable to print at home, nor as convenient.
