HP has released a free full-feature version of its Vertica Analytics Platform, HP Vertica Community Edition, for up to a full terabyte of data.

Speaking during a press conference at HP Discover 2013, in Las Vegas, Colin Mahony, senior VP and GM: HP Vertica, said that, although businesses understand the potential insights that can be gained from big data, they need to ensure the information analysed has value.

Vertica Community Edition aims to help HP's clients to determine the benefits of analysing their big data before going to the expense and trouble of deploying an enterprise-wide solution.

The software is free and downloadable, and provides the same functionality as HP Vertica Analytics Platform Enterprise Edition with no commitments or time limits.

Mahony says Vertica Community allows clients to test drive a next-generation analytics platform, gain insight from big data, and understand the real return on information of the project before they spend a cent.

Vertica Community Edition features several enhancements, including a Hadoop Distributed File System connector that speeds data loading and ensures seamless native integration between HDFS and the HP Vertica Analytics Platform.

It also facilitates optimised storage and simplified data archiving with flexible storage tiering that uses existing media for offline storage, eliminating the need for unnecessary backups.

Users can also see a fast return on information with expanded and improved performance of SQL functions to speed analytics results.
