IBM unveils zBC12

The mainframe offers twice the capacity as its predecessor, from less than R2 million.

IBM has announced that its new zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12) mainframe is now available in SA, offering twice the capacity as its predecessor, at a price point starting at under R2 million.

Blackwood was speaking on the sidelines of the IBM zEnterprise Executive Forum in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The event showcased the additions to IBM's zEnterprise portfolio, including the IBM zEnterprise BC12, new innovations for the IBM zEnterprise EC12, new releases of z/OS and z/VM, and new industry solutions and capabilities supporting cloud, analytics, mobile and security.

Deon Newman, VP of IBM System z Marketing, noted that mobile, social, analytics and cloud computing are reinventing the way in which enterprises engage with customers. The need for enterprises to address these priorities in an efficient and cost-effective way informed IBM's investment in developing the latest System z solutions, says Newman.

"The Z in zEnterprise stands for zero," says Newman. "As in zero downtime and zero hackability." These areas, he says, are of increasing importance to enterprises in SA. "Security is becoming increasingly critical, as is 100% availability.
