SnapScan was awarded Best App of the Year, at the MTN App Awards 2013, last night.

SnapScan allows a user to pay by scanning a code displayed in store or with a bill, confirming the amount and approving the transaction with a PIN. Receipts are mailed to shoppers digitally and use of the app is free.

The MTN App Awards celebrate innovation, originality and excellence in the South African app arena, and is judged by industry veterans such as Melissa Attree, Kojo Baffoe, Toby Shapshak, Jonathan Hoehler and Max Stone.

Nomalanga Nkosi, MTN SA GM for enterprise marketing, congratulated the SnapScan team, saying they demonstrated a solid passion for application development, and this, along with their innovation and understanding of what a mobile user really wants from an app, led them to receiving the prestigious award.

First time entrant Nedbank walked away with the best Android app in the consumer category for its Nedbank App Suite. The Nedbank App Suite has seen more than 250 000 downloads to date and allows clients to bank securely anytime, anywhere using BlackBerry, Apple, Android and selected Nokia devices, says the bank in a statement.

Nedbank CIO Fred Swanepoel says the bank is delighted with its win, especially since it is a first time entrant. "It has taken a lot to develop a world-class mobile application and this award confirms that we're moving towards being a leader in the mobile and digital space in SA," says Swanepoel.

Nkosi says the aim of the awards is to provide an environment that allows local developers to thrive and showcase the originality of their market approach. "This can only be achieved when we continue to work together with our partners in the industry who share in this vision. There is no doubt that local apps are certainly revolutionising the South African business landscape and MTN Business is so proud to be at the fore of such a prestigious event."
