The Department of Communications is set to have a workshop on the draft Broadband Policy, in Pretoria, tomorrow.

The workshop will be led by minister Yunus Carrim. This is the second time the draft policy is being taken for public consultation this year. Tomorrow's workshop is one of the last steps before the department takes the draft policy to Cabinet, it says in a statement.

"The draft National Broadband Policy will form the bedrock for achieving the targets set in the National Development Plan, which calls for an e-literate society that participates fully in the developmental and economic opportunities and benefits presented by ICT," notes the department.

It says the draft policy aims to "give expression to South Africa's vision for the country to develop a seamless information infrastructure by 2030".

This infrastructure will be "universally accessible across the country at a cost and quality that meets the needs of citizens, business and the public sector, and provides access to the creation and consumption of a wide range of converged applications and services required for effective economic and social participation," the department says.

The workshop will be held at the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research's convention centre at 10am.
