Cloud software maker VMware has announced Ravi Bhat will take over the reins as regional director for its Sub-Saharan Africa division. His appointment was effective from Wednesday.

According to a VMware statement, Bhat will report to Matt Piercy, regional VP for Northern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Bhat will head up the regional office in SA, and manage the company's expansion into the West, East and Central Africa region. He will be based in the Johannesburg office.

Prior to joining VMware, Bhat spent several years with IBM, most recently leading the IBM Software business in SA, says the statement.

"VMware is currently investing in the expansion of its operations throughout the Sub-Saharan Africa region, a region which is hungry for both virtualisation and cloud technologies," says Piercy.

"Our appointment of Ravi [Bhat] is further evidence of this commitment as well as of our personal investment in the region's leadership. We believe that his extensive experience and leadership skills will be a great asset to support our continued and envisaged growth in the region."

VMware this week reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as it sold more licences to enterprise customers and indicated strong licensing revenue growth would continue into next year.

The company said it expected revenue to grow 15% in 2014 on continued strength in its enterprise licensing business and higher demand for its vCloud Suite of products.

Bhat was unable to respond to a request for comment by time of publication.
