LG Electronics SA last night unveiled its latest smartphone handsets - the LG G Flex and LG G Pro Lite, at an event in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The smartphone maker revealed it plans to "revolutionise" the smartphone market with the LG G Flex curved unit, which is designed to fit the curve of the human face. The device features a six-inch OLED high-definition display, made of flexible plastic. The unit is powered by a 2.26GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS. The handset features a 3 500mAh embedded curved battery, and weighs in at 177g.

According to IL Hwan Lee, MD of LG Electronics SA, the company is going to change the shape of the smartphone category "forever", with the world's first curved flexible smartphone. "The G Flex is the triumph of engineering, cutting-edge from inside-out and is purposeful innovation that surprises," said Lee.

LG says it aims to take the lead in the smartphone market with the new G range, which follows the LG G2, launched towards the end of last year.

The mobile device houses 2GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board memory and does not have a memory card slot. The G Flex has a similar design to the G2, with rounded edges and no buttons on the sides, top or bottom of the body. The rear key buttons - for volume, camera and power - are found on the back of the device, below the rear-facing camera.

The G Flex sports a 13MP rear-facing camera and 2.1MP front-facing camera. Both G Flex and G Pro Lite smartphones have the knock-on feature to lock and unlock the device, and also have the guest mode feature, which was previously introduced in the G2.

The mobile device features a self-healing coating on the back cover panel, making it immune to small scratches. It also features user-centric UX features - such as QTheatre and Dual Window - which separate content on the screen into two windows for more viewing.

The G Flex will retail at R9 999 and will be available from April.

Younger audience

The LG G Pro Lite is a low-end smartphone targeted at the youth. LG says it has listened to consumers' demands for a cheaper smartphone, and says the device comes with a pre-installed BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app.

"We are pleased that LG Electronics will bring their customers the BBM application and give their customers another reason to enjoy using LG Mobile smartphones," Lee stated.

The handset features a 5.5-inch screen display and houses a 3 140mAh battery, 8MP camera and a stylus pen. The mobile device features dual speakers at the bottom of the body and is designed with an ultra-narrow bezel for an edge-to-edge viewing experience and slim design for a one-handed grip.

The G Pro Lite will retail at R4 799 and will be available from 1 February at Cell C stores. Other carriers will offer the phone from March.
