Nokia has introduced a family of low-cost smartphones - the X, X+ and XL. The devices run on a newly debuted forked variant of Android, called the Nokia X Software Platform.

The devices can run Android apps, but still have elements of Nokia's Asha range, as well as Windows. According to Nokia, the phones will run Android apps, but still feature Nokia's user experience and a wide range of Microsoft services.

In addition, instead of being taken to Google's cloud, users will be directed to Microsoft's cloud.

All three of the phones are dual SIM, and are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Dual Core processor. The devices feature a range of pre-installed third-party apps including the expected Twitter and BBM, and other Android apps can be downloaded from the Nokia Store, and third-party app stores too.

The company says the introduction of the Nokia X family of devices, will see it delivering the same design, quality and innovation it is known for, but to "lower price points to capture the fastest-growing segment of the smartphone market".

The Nokia X, priced at 89 euro, features a 4-inch IPS LCD screen, 512MB RAM and a 3MP camera. The X+ costs 99 euro, and offers 768MB RAM and includes 4GB MicroSD.

Finally, the XL offers a 5-inch screen, 768MB RAM, a free MicroSD card and it has both a 2MP front-facing camera for Skype calls, as well as a 5MP rear camera with autofocus and flash.

The phones are available in green, black, white, yellow and cyan. The X and X+ also come in red, and the XL in orange.

The Nokia X will be immediately available in Asia Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle-East and Africa. The Nokia X+ and XL are expected to be available from Q2 2014.
