BlackBerry's "communications centric" 9720 smartphone is now available in purple in SA, the company announced today.

This comes about three months after the Canadian company introduced a bright pink device to the 9720 family.

Designed for emerging markets and mirroring the look and feel of its mid-range Curve series, the 9720 features BlackBerry's iconic trackpad, a qwerty keyboard and 2.8-inch touch-screen.

The device runs on the updated version of the BlackBerry 7 operating system (OS), 7.1 OS, which unlocks via a swipe gesture and has lock screen camera access, among other new features.

It also includes a 5MP camera that can capture video, and a multicast mechanism - via which users can post messages simultaneously to BBM, Facebook and Twitter.

The device has a dedicated BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) key and includes BBM Voice, a feature introduced at the end of last year to bring users free voice calls over WiFi.

Previously the company said its latest version of BBM, featuring BBM Channels, would be available for download on the BlackBerry World storefront in the near future. Introduced at the BlackBerry World conference, in May, BBM Channels is a social feature that lets customers connect with businesses, brands, celebrities and groups of interest.

The smartphone maker says the new handset offers "generous" battery life and is ideal for customers upgrading from a feature phone or entry-level Android or Windows device.

Launched in SA in August, the BlackBerry 9720 also comes in blue, pink, black and white and is available on prepaid for around R2 500 (prices may vary).
