Cloud is disruptive - the industry can agree on this statement - but it can be hard to distinguish the facts from hype when it comes to how cloud actually disrupts an organisation.

This is according to Steve Wylie, GM of Cloud Connect at global tech services company UBM Tech, which has just completed the latest annual Enterprise Cloud Adoption survey with the Everest Group.

To distil fact from fiction, the Everest Group launched the Enterprise Cloud Adoption survey in 2012, in conjunction with Cloud Connect and UBM TechWeb. The group completed the third annual survey of enterprises and vendors, and shared the results in Las Vegas recently, at the Cloud Connect Summit, co-located with Interop.

Wylie says participants shared their experiences and perspectives on the what, why and how of enterprise cloud adoption. The survey looked at which cloud layer most adoption is happening in, what enterprise perceptions of public versus private cloud are, what the most significant cloud adoption drivers and challenges are, and whether there is misalignment between buyers and service providers.

Here are some of the key findings that differentiate the reality from perception:

* Cloud hype: enterprises are still experimenting with cloud.
Cloud reality: enterprises are investing significantly in cloud.

* Cloud hype: cloud is primarily a technology play.
Cloud reality: cloud is emerging as a strategic differentiator.

* Cloud hype: security concerns are history.
Clout reality: security concerns are declining, but alive.

* Cloud hype: cloud consumption is simple.
Cloud reality: meaningful external help is needed to adopt cloud.

* Cloud hype: the CIO is irrelevant.
Cloud reality: a battle is on to regain the lost glory.
