Compuware UNIFACE adds Web services support, Windows XP GUI

Johannesburg, 18 Jun 2003

Compuware Corporation SA has announced the availability of UNIFACE 8.3, the latest iteration of its enterprise development environment for building, renewing and integrating large and complex business applications.

Offering unrivalled technology independence, UNIFACE integrates with both legacy and leading-edge technologies, helping enterprises to successfully manage business and technology innovation by future-proofing their most important applications.

According to Gerrie Swart, product manager at Compuware SA, UNIFACE 8.3 offers increased capabilities for integrating with existing applications by adding Web services support, considered to be a vital consideration in today`s economic environment.

"Functionality built into UNIFACE can now be made available as a Web service, enabling integration between UNIFACE, J2EE, .NET and legacy applications. This includes applications developed using Compuware OptimalJ, a model-driven, pattern-based Java development environment," he says.

In addition, CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) support has been enhanced in version 8.3 to include the bundling of The Ace Orb, an open source Object Request Broker product.

With UNIFACE, IT staff can assemble and integrate large-scale applications from individual components.

"These components may be constructed using different tools and programming languages. UNIFACE applications are model-driven, so they adapt easily to sweeping changes in process, structure and logic. Components may also be reused, boosting productivity and quality, while reducing development times," Swart says.

Both the UNIFACE development environment and deployed UNIFACE applications have a full Windows XP `look and feel`, giving the UNIFACE user interface a consistent appearance when deployed on Windows XP.

Additional functionality highlights are a hyperlink widget and a grid widget, which comply with Microsoft standards and provide improved performance and productivity benefits.

UNIFACE 8.3 is available in two editions, which are available immediately. The Standard Edition (SE) supports UNIFACE development and deployment in distributed environments, while the E-business Edition (EE) includes the SE and Web development and deployment functionality.
