Motorola unveils wind-up charger

It is not so much a case of "Back to The Future" as "Forward to The Past".

In a move harking back a century to hand-cranked telephones and wind-up record players (called gramophones in those days) wireless technology firm Motorola yesterday introduced a new wind-up charger for cellphones.

The device, which has a handle that can be cranked, will allow users to make that one last phone call before their battery runs out and could be invaluable in an emergency.

Motorola said its new product, FreeCharge, developed with Freeplay Energy Group, will allow customers to talk for up to three to five minutes by cranking the charger for 45 to 60 seconds.

FreeCharge, which contains a rugged generator, can be connected to the cellphone via a plug-in adapter. It will be available in March with a suggested retail price of $65.

In addition to manually generating the power, FreeCharge users will also be able to charge it electronically and store power. FreeCharge could then be used to recharge cellphones anywhere if customers` cellphone batteries run out.
