Telkom explains Internet failure

Johannesburg, 07 Aug 2007

Cable damage was responsible for an interruption of Internet services in the Sunninghill, Sandton and Rivonia area last Friday, says Telkom.

Group executive for corporate communication Lulu Letlape says a contractor, "unrelated to Telkom, accidentally drilled through a 48-fibre Telkom cable, while working for another service provider in the Sunninghill Park vicinity".

Some 1 687 customers were affected, she says, adding that all services were restored within 24 hours.

"The problem was detected by Telkom's network surveillance team, at the National Network Operations Centre... Immediate investigation revealed that extensive damage was caused, with breakages in two manholes," Letlape explains.

"Telkom apologises to all our customers whose services were interrupted and assures customers the company will always endeavour to tackle breakages with speed and accuracy in a bid to restore services as expeditiously as possible."
