Mobile WiMax is the emerging technology of the moment, as it offers personalised broadband in real time, anytime and anywhere, says Rick Rogers, MD of Alvarion.

"Mobile WiMax offers continuous connectivity using many types of mobile consumer devices, allowing subscribers to get the most out of work or play, making their broadband connections mobile or making their mobile service broadband," explains Rogers.

In rural and remote areas of emerging markets, WiMax offers a solution that crosses the digital divide and bridges the gap to areas without communication services, while in developing areas it offers an alternative to DSL.

WiMax also functions within the personal broadband market through its DSL-on-the-go service, which mobilises broadband connections in densely populated areas. For this market, mobile WiMax facilitates always-on broadband connectivity, mobility and roaming services for its users.

Triple play voice, video and data services over a mobile broadband network are also features of WiMax.

"It offers a new adoption model for subscribers as they are able to leverage the 'retail model' for WiMax-enabled devices. Subscribers will be able to get their devices in the electronics stores and retail chains. Devices will not have to be pre-approved by the service provider and will only require certification," Rogers concludes.
