Nortel Government Solutions selects NetIQ to help manage one of the world's largest VOIP implementations

Houston, 14 May 2008

NetIQ, an Attachmate business, today announced its integral role in what is expected to be one of the largest voice over IP (VOIP) deployments in the world.

As part of a 10-year contract awarded to Nortel Government Solutions by the US Social Security Administration (SSA), NetIQ will provide best-of-breed VOIP network diagnostics, monitoring and professional services for day-to-day operations and management.

"Government agencies around the world trust Nortel to provide comprehensive communication solutions and IP telephony is no exception," said Chuck Saffell, chief executive officer, Nortel Government Solutions. "Proven management solutions are essential in optimising the SSA VOIP deployment to meet service demands and reduce communication costs over time."

NetIQ will provide the following to support the SSA implementation:

* NetIQ AppManager for VOIP - Enables administrators to effectively monitor quality of service and end-user experience with VOIP applications.
* NetIQ Vivinet Assessor - Delivers network readiness diagnostics for converged networks - voice, data, video - to ensure consistent application performance.
* NetIQ Vivinet Diagnostics - Proactively discovers and quickly troubleshoots call quality problems on VOIP networks, reducing the mean time to resolve issues.

Using AppManager for proactive monitoring will allow SSA to monitor and manage service levels across Nortel Communication Server 1000 and Nortel IP tele-service centre infrastructure and to quickly troubleshoot business-critical issues. Additionally, it will provide SSA with capacity planning data to help determine optimal network traffic patterns and usage. The SSA will also receive access to the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Toolkit, extending AppManager to monitor and manage a number of additional network devices as well as professional services to assist Nortel Government Solutions in rolling out the VOIP deployment.

"NetIQ provides ongoing management of VOIP implementations and we are honoured that Nortel Government Solutions has chosen us to help them make this VOIP deployment a success," said Chris Pick, vice-president of Products and Marketing, NetIQ. "Converged data and communication technologies are becoming essential to business operations, and the combination of Nortel Government Solutions and NetIQ provides the most trusted and comprehensive solution available to the market today."

Converged communications technologies are ideal for today's distributed organisations; however, maintaining consistent performance, availability and quality of service remains a challenge. Too often, companies deploy VOIP without fully understanding the impact of converging voice and data traffic on a shared network, potentially leading to dissatisfied users and system downtime. By managing the entire VOIP lifecycle, including network assessment, pre-deployment, ongoing monitoring, reporting and capacity planning, NetIQ VOIP solutions proactively detect quality of service, limit call degradation and provide quick diagnosis to ensure a consistent, exceptional end-user experience.
