Symantec acquires Vontu, boosts data loss prevention capabilities

By 7 Days Technologies
Johannesburg, 04 Sept 2007

Symantec's recent acquisition of data loss prevention (DLP) solution company Vontu for $350 million provides Symantec with an important component of its Security 2.0 vision which shifts the focus of security from simply locking down infrastructure to protecting the information itself.

Vontu Data Loss Prevention 8 can accurately detect data as it is used, copied or sent, both at the endpoint and on the network, enabling organisations to locate stored data anywhere, automatically protect it and dispose of it when appropriate.

Says Sean Glansbeek, marketing manager of Seven Days Technologies, a mobile application and security provider that represents and distributes Vontu's solutions: "Bringing together best-in-class Data Loss Prevention and the market leadership of Symantec in security software means a complete coverage across threats. This combined solution covers the endpoint, network and storage with an integrated policy platform, helping customers understand where their data is, how it is being used, and how to proactively enforce their data protection policies."

Says Tom Kendra, group president of Security and Data Management Group, Symantec: "In a business environment that is increasingly competitive, transparent and regulated, companies need confidence that their most valuable asset - information - is safe. Only then will security become more of a business enabler than a business inhibitor. The combination of Symantec's existing portfolio and Vontu's leading product and dedicated team enables us to deliver a central component of our Security 2.0 vision to customers - information-centric security that protects both the device and the information itself."

Adds Joseph Ansanelli, CEO of Vontu: "The next wave of security is based on one simple idea - it's about the information. By joining forces with Symantec and building upon its strength in enterprise security and storage solutions, we will be uniquely positioned to help customers answer the important questions as to where their confidential information is stored, how it is being used, and how best to prevent its loss."
