3M proves itself with its own network technology

Johannesburg, 09 Jul 2004

3M South Africa, one of 200 wholly owned subsidiaries in the 3M global group, recently upgraded its technology utilising its own product, from the traditional Token Ring technology to the simpler and more efficient Ethernet environment.

The Communications Market Division, one of 3M South Africa`s five business units, has developed a vast range of innovative ICT (information and communications technology) products, which have been used in the new system.

3M`s products are extensively researched before being released to ensure that by the time it reaches the end-user - it is backed by 3M`s overall product offering of reliability and efficiency. This is the reasoning why 3M South Africa has absolute faith in installing these products in its own network and those of its customers` highly sensitive networks around the world.

3M South Africa recently relocated to its new home in Woodmead, Sandton, and due to the architecture of the building, an enormous amount of design and planning was required to integrate the utilities of the building with the aesthetically pleasing design. 3M partnered with Dimension Data Advanced Infrastructure because of its expertise and track record in the IT sector.

The cabling project commenced in April 2004 with very tight deadlines, as the company move was planned for mid-May 2004. The fact that 3M`s products are simple and efficient without compromising on quality, resulted in the project being completed well within the tight time constraints.

The complete network comprises 1 100 network points making use of 3M`s Cat 6 components and its world renowned FTTD (fibre-to-the-desk) solution, commonly known as the VF-45 / Volition product range.

When the move took place and 3M employees went to their new workstations, they were armed with all the necessary tools and utilities, and no disruptions were experienced, and especially by its customers.

To date, the new systems have been unfailing and the transition has run smoothly.

3M South Africa, providing practical and ingenious solutions that help our customers succeed.
