PeopleSoft hosts HR scorecard presentation by bestselling author Huselid

Johannesburg, 09 Jul 2004

PeopleSoft Africa is sponsoring the first ever visit to SA of human resources (HR) specialist, Dr Mark Huselid, co-author of the international bestseller, "The HR scorecard: Linking people, strategy and performance".

Huselid will speak at an event at the Sandton Convention Centre on 19 July, on the topic: "Using the HR and workforce scorecards to drive strategy execution", which is based on new, as yet unpublished material.

Samantha van Staden, business development manager at the Institute for International Research (IIR), the event organiser, says the presentation is aimed primarily at high-level HR executives across the board in terms of industry sectors and government.

"Huselid is an acknowledged worldwide specialist in his field and this is the first time in SA that attendees will be able to benefit from his experience in the area of HR and workforce scorecards," she says.

Dave Macdonald, national solutions consulting manager for PeopleSoft Africa, says: "Huselid is one of the world`s foremost HR authorities and has delivered more than 300 presentations throughout the US, Europe and Asia.

"In this exclusive full-day special event, Huselid will offer a comprehensive view of how organisations can develop measurement systems to help execute strategy.

"His extensive research and experience, as well as his passion and enthusiasm for HR measurement and strategy, will encourage HR executives to think out of the box as he delves into the debate of whether HR should be considered a `value creation unit` or a `cost centre`," says Macdonald.

Based on his international bestseller and his forthcoming book, "The workforce scorecard: Managing and measuring human capital to drive strategy execution", Huselid will describe how organisations can develop measurement systems to help execute strategy in the following five steps:

*.Step 1: Clarifying your business strategy and building a business case for investing in HR.
*.Step 2: Creating a talent map and identifying HR`s deliverables.
*.Step 3: Selecting metrics: Building HR and workforce scorecards.
*.Step 4: Aligning the HR architecture with the needed HR deliverables.
*.Step 5: Implementing an HR scorecard and HR decision support system.

Macdonald says: "Work by Huselid and his co-authors has indicated that effective measurement initiatives highlight the contribution of HR and human capital to an organisation. Through these findings, the HR scorecard was born.

"Huselid will now introduce attendees to the workforce scorecard and share his thoughts on measurement, human capital, strategy and performance, and share some insights from his latest, as yet unpublished book."
