PandaLabs is offering to pay R10 000 to the charity of choice of a company that is deemed 'malware-free'.

A study carried out by PandaLabs of more than 1.5 million users revealed that 72% of companies with an up-to-date security solution installed had malware on their networks, explains Jeremy Matthews, head of Panda Security's sub-Saharan operations.

"With the launch of Infected or Not, Panda is challenging South African businesses to scan their networks to ascertain whether they too are infected," he says.

And, he says, should a company's network be virus-free, it stands to win the opportunity to hand over a R10 000 donation to the charity of its choice.

"The malware threat South African businesses face is frightening," he explains. "Traditional security solutions are no longer enough to protect users' computers from the flood of new malware samples that appear every day."

He says the aim of this test is to challenge the perception among companies that when it comes to security breaches, 'it won't happen to me'. "This laissez-faire attitude results in companies sidelining security so that confidential data theft and financial losses all too often result," he says.

"At the same time, we want to give companies participating in Infected or Not the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate - at no cost to themselves."
