Microsoft`s automotive business unit has entered into a long-term strategic partnership with carmaker Fiat Auto.

The alliance involves the development of systems that integrate the vehicle with motorists` own devices, such as cellphones or Pocket PCs, allowing them to communicate with the outside world.

Known as telematics systems, they allow motorists to use standard information services, including Web services, and a hands-free phone, while Bluetooth connectivity ensures that drivers` personal address books and contacts will be accessible in the car.

The system will feature voice activation allowing operation in a hands-free environment.

Microsoft says in addition that digital music stored in personal electronic devices will be accessible through a USB connection on the dashboard.

"Drivers will have access to a wealth of services, including off-board navigation and real-time traffic information, such as those offered by Fiat`s bCONNECT."

bCONNECT, a Fiat division, provides a range of services including maps, driving directions, traffic information and weather updates, through in-car telematic units, mobile phones, Internet and PDAs.

Peter Knook, senior VP of Microsoft`s Mobile and Embedded Devices division, says Fiat has consistently developed affordable and practical cars.

"By combining Fiat`s knowledge of the auto industry with our knowledge of software, together we will be able to meet the needs of drivers and passengers for a safer and more enjoyable in-car experience."
