Global roaming Internet service for South Africans in time for Olympics

Johannesburg, 26 Jul 2004

Tiscali has re-launched Tiscali Traveller, a global roaming service that provides Internet connectivity to South Africans travelling abroad at the cost of a local telephone call of the country the call is made in. The service will save globetrotters the hassle of using Internet caf'es, which can prove to be time-consuming and expensive.

Tiscali Traveller is powered by iPass, a global virtual network platform that provides simple and secure connections and offers coverage in over 150 countries. Tiscali is affiliated to a group of Internet service providers from around the world, allowing it to have another ISP`s network at its own subscribers` disposal. This enables users to gain instant access to the Internet and enjoy the same Tiscali services from anywhere in the world, at a local charge. An additional fee of US$15 per hour is levied for the connectivity portion of the service.

"Tiscali Traveller offers Internet users overall lower connectivity costs by ensuring that they will always dial into a local number irrespective of where they are connecting from in the world," says Julie-Anne Doyle, head of consumer products at Tiscali SA.

While Tiscali Traveller enables connectivity to the Internet, it also ensures that e-mail is downloaded directly to an e-mail client such as Outlook instead of using online Web interfaces that can be slow to access.

Doyle explains that before departing on any travels, the user will need to download Tiscali Traveller software from www.tiscali.co.za, install it on his laptop and sign up for a roaming Internet account.

"The software has the dial-up numbers for all the points of presence (POPs) in affiliated countries throughout the world. All you need to do is select the city you require access in, and Tiscali Traveller will connect you to the Internet.

"Once connected, you will be able to access all services you would ordinarily access from home or the office, like e-mail, chat applications and documents."

Tiscali Traveller works on dial-up, ISDN, wireless and wired broadband connections.
