CA-backed golfer targets 2006 world junior championships

Johannesburg, 29 Jul 2004

Computer software company, Computer Associates (CA) Africa, is to support the promising young South African golfer, Ricardo Korsten (13) in his bid to compete in the junior world championship tournament series in the US in 2006.

This skills and training programme is in line with CA`s support for previously disadvantaged communities and sports bodies in SA, says CA country manager, Gary Lawrence.

"The Korsten project grew out of our support for the annual Inter-computer Golf Tournament in Swaziland," says Lawrence. "Every year funds are collected which are earmarked for meritorious projects within the sporting world. This year, with the help of the computer community in SA, sufficient funds were raised to support this initiative."

According to Lawrence, the selection criteria did not emphasis expertise, but rather the worthiness of the cause.

"As a result, I am delighted with our selection panel`s choice and on behalf of CA staff and customers wish Ricardo well in this quest to develop his skills," he says.

In addition to training and coaching programmes, Korsten will be enrolled as a member of the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

The project includes dedicated, full-time training by well-known golfing professional Bryan Roelofsz.

"Ricardo has enormous potential. I am impressed by his dedication and love of the game," says Roelofsz.

"I believe that with hard work, high levels of practise and application we will be in a position to perform very well at the world junior championships in 2006. This is our goal and we will do our best to achieve it," he adds.

Neil Korsten, Ricardo`s father, is delighted at his son`s enthusiasm for the game and the opportunity afforded him to unlock his potential.

"The support from CA is very welcome and appreciated. I am sure Ricardo will do his very best, develop his golfing expertise and eventually do SA proud on the international circuit," he says.
