AMD enters local quad server domain through Annex

Johannesburg, 03 Aug 2004

AMD has officially entered the local quad server space with the release of its Opteron server processor. Annex Distribution carries the AMD brand and will utilise its fully operational server division to help take this solution to the local market.

Annex Distribution has entered into a full distribution agreement with Tyan Computer Corporation, recognised for its top-level market partnership with AMD on Opteron-based server boards and Barebones.

According to terms of the agreement, Annex has been granted sole distribution for the entire Africa region of all Tyan products.

"This will ensure that Annex is positioned as the best partner to choose for all AMD Opteron-based solutions for any customers in the Africa channel," explains Simon Pretorius, Server Division Manager at Annex.

"Tyan is used by all the top international distributors for AMD, proof that this company is the best possible partner to team up with. Annex aims at being the most complete server solutions provider in SA and Tyan takes us one step closer towards this overall objective."

There are several advantages to AMD`s Opteron server processor including technologies such as HyperTransport, dual support for 32- and 64-bit applications and memory controller embedded onto the CPU decreasing memory latency from old traditional memory addressing methods.

This is complemented by the fact that AMD`s Quad Opteron solutions are available at up to 30% less than most competitive products.

"Many of the top 500 supercomputers are Opteron-based and obviously this places AMD in a very competitive position as a serious contender in the server market," adds Pretorius. "The key objective for Annex is to become the best solution provider to the reseller/dealer channel in SA. Being able to supply the best Quad and dual solutions based on AMD Opteron technology places Annex one step closer to achieving this goal."
