Acronis releases new versions of True Image imaging, backup, recovery tools

Announcements include industry's only live imaging tool for Linux servers

Johannesburg, 11 Aug 2004

Acronis Inc, the Silicon Valley-based developer of live disk imaging tools and disk utilities, has released Version 8 of its award-winning True Image and True Image Server backup and disaster-recovery tools.

Also announced is Acronis True Image Server 8.0 for Linux, the industry's only disk and partition imaging tool for Linux servers that allows system administrators to image a live Linux server without closing applications or disconnecting users.

Utilising Acronis's unique SnapShot technology, Acronis True Image is a reliable and easy-to-use software tool for disk backup and rapid bare-metal restore. Rather than rely on file-based backups, True Image creates a complete image of the entire Windows or Linux drive or partition, thereby enabling rapid restoration of all configurations, customisations, updates and patches in the operating system as well as in application and data, the company said.

Developed by Acronis, the San Francisco-based technological leader in storage management solutions, True Image Server allows systems administrators and network managers to create the exact disk image of live servers for complete backup, providing a comprehensive and cost-effective server protection solution.

"A unique feature - one that's of great interest to every IT manager with one or more servers - is the ability to image 'live' Windows or Linux servers," says Arthur Williamson, managing director of local distributor Synapsys. "This means user and server administrator productivity is maintained during imaging and backup because there's no need to close files, end applications, disconnect users, or bring down the server," Williamson says.

The product also supports incremental backups, scripting, scheduling, dynamic disks, tape drives, CD and DVD writers, as well as USB2.0 and Firewire storage. "And to ensure the data integrity essential in any server disaster recovery plan, an image verification tool is integrated to make sure backups maintain integrity and are fully restorable," Williamson adds.

Base-metal restore, system transfer to new hardware, or disk cloning is quickly and easily accomplished. Disk or partition images can be mounted as a virtual drive and files can be selectively browsed or restored, according to the company.

Acronis True Image is being widely adopted in mission-critical environments in the financial services, energy, and transportation sectors in the US and Europe, where server downtime can cost thousands of dollars a minute.

In SA, several large organisations have implemented Acronis True Image for both workstations and servers, Synapsys says.

Volume discounts, site licences, and various maintenance and support offerings are available from Synapsys via its networks of software resellers.
