A former journalist, Isabelle Rorke, who is now an animation producer, has won the Department of Trade and Industry`s Technology Women in Business Award.

The award was presented at a function held in the Northern Cape Province`s capital of Kimberley earlier this week. About 500 delegates attended and 16 were short-listed for the awards.

Rorke won the ICT sector award and was also the overall winner.

The Technology Women in Business awards were instituted to recognise the impact women have on various sectors of the economy through the application of technology.

Rorke says she was inspired by many of the other delegates. "It was amazing to see what people were doing and achieving with far fewer resources."

Her Bryanston-based company, Anamazing Workshop, produces animation features and is involved in reviving a number of defunct publications. One of the projects it is working on is renewing the SA Broadcasting Corporation`s (SABC`s) old children`s programme "Liewe Heksie" and another is the "Magic Cellar" based on African folktales.

The company is also involved in a learnership programme that has sent a number of people to India to develop animation skills.

Rorke`s former career as a journalist included work on magazines and a stint as a producer for SABC`s "Morning Live" breakfast show.

Speaking at the function, trade and industry deputy minister Lindiwe Hendricks said: "We are trying to encourage young girls to get involved or choose technology-related fields for the advancement of their lives."
