Fujitsu Siemens Computers announces PRIMERGY BX600

The four-way Server Blade for power-hungry data centres

Johannesburg, 16 Aug 2004

Fujitsu Siemens Computers this week announced the launch of PRIMERGY BX600 four-way Server Blade which is ideal for power-hungry data centres. The new blade will be available in August and is currently the most compact SCSI server blade worldwide. The BX600 is the ideal platform for power-hungry enterprise applications due to its high performance and flexibility.

The PRIMERGY BX600 Blade Server is the ideal answer to cope with the demands of modern corporate data centres and Internet or application service providers. With an installation of up to 30 four-way servers in a 46-unit 19-inch rack, IT managers can optimise the use of floorspace in their data centres. The PRIMERGY Server Management Suite included with delivery ensures trouble-free system installation and configuration with additional benefits including reliability and redundant components, as well as easy and effective administration.

"With the release of our new four-way server blades, we now have the most diverse blade portfolio on the market, from the footprint-optimised BX300 Blade Server to the performance-optimised four-way blade in our BX600 Blade Server," says Sean Wainer, Product Manager Enterprise Computing at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "This enables our customers to use the blade architecture for most of their server environment and to take advantage of its benefits throughout the entire data centre."

"By enhancing the PRIMERGY Blade family with the latest XEON MP variant, Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides its customers with optimal performance for all application scenarios," says Abhi Talwalkar, Intel Vice-President and General Manager, Enterprise Platforms Group. "This underlines the impressive position of Fujitsu Siemens Computers as the leading European supplier of server systems."

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has already successfully implemented solutions which include PRIMERGY BX600 for a variety of customer projects, often involving complex storage demands. The South African Department of Labour has eagerly adopted the new blade technology and is operating 313 BX600 blade servers (2-way), which are distributed across the entire country.

AMS BG, Austria`s leading IT service provider, is currently testing the BX600 Blade Server for use as an e-mail server. Earlier tests illustrated its flexibility and scalability and as soon as the test phase is completed, the BX600 Blade Server will go live throughout the country.

The city council of Wolverhampton, London, recently implemented a completely new server technology solution based on the easy administration of BX300 and BX600 Blade Servers in order to provide the community with the best possible service and meet the legal requirement that city councils must offer all their public services online by the year 2005.

The new four-way variant of the BX600 offers complete blade server solutions for the following areas:

* Load-balanced server farms
* Flexible e-mail server infrastructures
* Modern multi-tier ERP solutions
* Efficient consolidation platforms based on virtual machine concepts
* Powerful database servers
* Reliable infrastructure servers

The PRIMERGY BX600 four-way Server Blade with two processors will become available in Germany in September 2004 at a starting price of a little under EUR8 000 (plus VAT). An entry-level system with a complete PRIMERGY BX600 Blade Server with two four-way server blades will cost around EUR23 100 (plus VAT).

* Up to four Intel Xeon MP Processors; max 16GB main memory; four Gigabit Ethernet channels; up to four Fibre Channel I/O channels for connecting SAN systems.

* Flexibility.

* Since the four-way processor server blade uses the same PRIMERGY BX600 infrastructure as the dual processor blade, it can be operated in the same chassis (mixed configurations). The PRIMERGY BX600 chassis holds up to five four-way blades or up to ten two-way blades.

* Investment protection.

* Starting in the fourth quarter of 2004, the two-way server blade will be available with the new Intel Xeon EM64T processors (code name "Nocona"), as will all other two-way tower and rack servers of the PRIMERGY product family.

* Up to five hot-pluggable server blades, each with up to four Intel Xeon MP processors (lb 3GHz, lb 4MB TLC) and up to 16GB ECC DDR SDRAM (PC2100).

* The PRIMERGY BX600 Blade Server system can hold dual and four-way blade servers simultaneously (mixed configuration).

* Each server blade can be equipped with up to two hot-pluggable Ultra320 SCSI hard drives with up to 146 GB each. The SCSI hard disks do not require a separate blade slot.

* Four on-board Gigabit Ethernet LAN channels.

* One VGA and two USB ports on the front side via special cables.

* Link to KVM switch via the midplane.

* Four 2Gb Fibre Channel channels per server blade (optional).
